Passenger elevators' capacities are related to the available floor space. Generally passenger elevators are available in capacities from 1, to 6, pounds (–2, kg) in lb ( kg) increments.

TRB’s Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Synthesis Elevator and Escalator Maintenance and Safety Practices documents elevator and escalator maintenance activities, safety practices, and passenger communication efforts at five U.S. transit agencies. The five agencies where information was gathered are MARTA (Atlanta, Georgia), NYCTA .   A group of transit researchers has pinpointed 50 train stations that should get elevators and improved accessibility, while the MTA waits for a contractor to figure out locations that would best.

The passenger service level in an elevator system depends on the planning of the elevator group and on the control of the elevators.

In this thesis the contribution of passenger and elevator traffic for an elevator group with multiple shafts is studied by simulations and theoretical analysis.

A traffic study provides a detailed traffic and performance analysis of the elevator, indicating whether the system is operating up to its original specificationsa sign of proper maintenanceor if performance levels have slipped.
